right back into the depth of the recording.
dynamic and frequency response sounds thru the roof.
has no chips or cheap fake miniature components.
just two sweet double triodes
and proper fat 1970s simple neve-ish all transistor amps.
panel is 675mm x 360mm. contained in a transportable suitcase sized object with detachable legs!

” I am listening to your phono stage now. It really is something very very special. I thought my !@#$ was good but yours just blows it out of the ballpark”. ..(nathan haines is auckland/london based jazz musician/composer)

a turntable (MM cartridge) plugs into the phono inputs and a computer/cd/tape/mixer/whatever can plug into the line inputs. there are adjustable gain stages for the phono amp channels – so to pick a gain factor that suits the level of the record. some records need less gain to get in focus – some need a bit more.

there is a smooth rotary cross fader control to select between the phono or line to mixture into the EQ amps, master output amps, and xover . plug a good mike or synth or any instrument into the studio preamp – lay an effect in it  with it’s insert function and mix it with the phono or line input.

also send the mike/di and the phono/line sound out to an  effect processor – bring it back – mix it  in.

wear headphones 1/2 on to look cool . and  to 1/2 listen to any sound selected audio source in order to sort a cue point or check an incoming level. also set the meters to your preference – maybe even turn them off – go commando.

this preamp is set up to play directly into a power amplifier-speakers/powered monitors – set those to go loud and then use the phonozoopa master to set your room level.

i’ve not been audiophiliac / minimal with this design. there’s all sorts of adjustability going on. because. every record has been made up – played – recorded – mixed – mastered – cut and sold up by THE craziest obsessive bunch of mother!@#ers ever . u know it. so the phonographa (1080 neve-ish) eq can help sort it out . taming a potentially scratchy top ended so as to tune up some to feel the sound fill a room without harshness that will kill your concentration. sometimes a record might love a mid top end 3khz shelvey kicker . or a 12 khz sizzler. and hell . the bottom end might need some deal of massage too . the 50hz and150hz shelves can save a thin record from itself. the wide low middle end adjustment is like a heater warm&friendly setting. the very careful listener adjustment of the two controls and two switches is definitely worthwhile. yes.. the production of LP records – and big fat hifi sound tone adjustable systems were made for each other . so ive made an eq that can peak for the clear listen and experience – only so to enjoy it even more.

dressed best DJs in the world

classic set up . 1200s.pioneer mixer. and a monoman running the big mono kick ass speaker stacks.

ruggedtechniques .  hal smith stevens has been visiting me for years now. he is always so enthusiastic and charming. and extremely talented.  and one day we’ll get to work on a major major project together.

my god man !  dont hurt yourself with that contraption.

it might be a crazy musical  technical adventure that is biblical. or  it may even  be a technical musical product thing that is functional AND biblical.

dont worry kind groom.  we are completely trained for all complications.

he got formally hitched to a wonderful girl and threw a very special  party at alberton.  it was an awesome event for hal and kirsty .

yyeeaahh.

everybody had a great time and of course the good djs were impeccable

wot the blighty chaps . we have sullied this LP record surface with our party antics.

toby muir with his big monoman mono pa system out to play.  … sounds  rude actually .. but he was very well mannered about it all.  the monoman unit contains a valve preamp -    4 system output distribution amplifiers -   and a 4 way adjustable speaker amp xover amplifier splitta unit. all transistor circuits . its way expensive so forget about it.  it does so much that we dont know what even to call it other than the monoman.

monoman lives!

this whole package is ready and banging. so im looking forward to plugging the bugger into the big 100KW pa system. ive been playing records thru it . and distributing  out into the radios and grams and monitor amps ive got around this room. sounds awesome to change the focus of parts and flavours of audio and seemingly fill up a space with very delicate shifting tones. dont get me started. im all about that shit. i’ll put a little thin eq and a slow echo in one speaker way over in the corner – and a bassey round tone with a phazey squeal in  a speaker over the other side. fill in with the mantle radio left reverb and blaster for the right flat flat  … and hell. youve got a hell over a flavourfull sound.  you can pop the vocal out of the 8″ woofer or the 1″ tweeter.   good for much more trickery pokery than that gay sounding example . OR just easy-peasy-by-ear  sweet sweetening of the classic 4 way stack.  i need another beer.  given the bar space i could tweak the surround sound of music into the eeriest experiential ….  altering state happening.  something to really turn the ears on.

monoman progress

igor spent the day testing and tweaking his filter circuits. 4 eight pole switches controlling 12 active frequency filtering operational amplifiers.  an uber complicated device with a few hundred things to potentially get wrong.  igors dam good and smart tho and they sound awesome.  4 clean bands. sub- bass- mid- hi with sweepable crossover frequencies. it will no doubt become our new studio mastering sound splitter equaliser.  a stereo control version would need 16 pole 5 position switches. woof. and it will eat your computer for breakfast. late last nite i got excited and rough assembled the front panel to see what it was going to look like…. and it looks pretty cool i think.  so absolutely unique. but this morning  i scuttled our progress totally. after noticing some paint spottiness. well.. it actually looked like someone had spit up on the thing. and we cant have that can we. so its all dismantled now for a few days while that gets redone.  gives me time to  admin and fix the car and mow the lawns and the dishes.

the monoman will need dr who tech

the ekadek MONOMAN is a mono tube transistor multi crossed over split P.A control unit-anator. as you can tell we dont quite knowly sure  what to call it  . the input stage is an  MB1 two valve amplifier with volume, gain, and an output attenuation/loading circuit . it  feeds  4  isolated distribution amplifier level controlled output stages.  one of those then feeds a four way four output sweeping cross over frequency  balancing amplifier. so as to fine tune the main central 4 way stack of the sound system. sub.bass.mid.top . the other distributed outputs feed the other amplifiers and speakers strapped all together. a big gangbanging strapped up solid  P.A machine. and all this happens at the speed of light. the monoman control unit will be  housed in a  old tape recorder vinyl-led plywood skin and even has its own 2 watt valve phones/spka monitor amplifier.  just for those days when the 2000 watt stack of speakers is looking too big for the boot. the cunning stunt of the job is fitting it in the box. 2 valve amps/3 tubes. associated transformers. 8 output  amps. 16 filter  amps. all transistor. 8 pole 5 position switches. 3 line transformers for phase reversal options. all those xlrs. all that shiny sexiness with  black knobs and a fat fat tubed  transistor sound.
